American Walnut and Solid Brass: Why We Never Use Veneer

While the furniture industry turns to MDF veneer for speed and lightness, here is the craft philosophy behind our insistence on kiln-dried solid American walnut and raw brass.

Although many products in the modern design world are sold with the word 'luxury,' turn them over and you find synthetic resins, plastic edge banding, and printed foil veneers. The clearest decision we made in the Mobile Coffee Cart workshop from day one was this: every millimeter you touch will be solid, real, living material.

The Memory of Wood: Uninterrupted Grain from a Single Tree

American black walnut (Juglans nigra), with its deep chocolate tones, purplish figured transitions, and extraordinary dimensional stability, is the noblest material in woodworking. When building the body of a coffee cart, we do not join random pieces of lumber.

We match boards sliced from a single log across the front face. That way, even as drawer fronts open and close, the grain line of the wood flows unbroken from one end to the other.

“Solid walnut doesn't lose value when scratched; sanded deeply and rubbed with natural oil, it returns to the nobility of its first day.”

Raw Solid Brass: A Living Metal

Many makers use brass-look aluminum or lacquered galvanized sheet. We, on the other hand, use lathe-turned solid brass rods for everything from drawer pulls to protective rails.

Instead of plasticizing the brass surfaces with synthetic lacquers, we leave them raw. That way, as time passes, as the barista's hands touch them, and as the aroma of coffee settles in, the metal takes on a noble bronze patina.

Summary & Key Notes

Takeaways From This Article

  • Solid wood breathes by adapting to moisture and heat, so it doesn't crack.
  • Natural linseed and tung oil protect food-contact surfaces without giving off a chemical finish odor.
  • Patinated brass adds antique value and character to the furniture.
